National Pavilion UAE, Arsenale, Venezia
Architecture Biennale 2018

The competition required to provide two project ideas. The two architectural proposals presented, while different, are linked by the Freespace theme of the Biennale Architettura 2018, and by the fundamental nature of the space of the UEA pavilion. The geometrical inspiration of both proposals is rooted in the axis that characterizes the space of the pavilion. The theme of the exhibition, and its emphasis on humanity as architecture’s focus, is the inspiration for the aesthetic quality of the space. The first proposal presented here, creates a shell within the space that follows the existing spatial axis utilizing gypsum board panels. The shell envelops the visitor within a generous three dimensional exhibit space. Inside the shell, three large horizontal surfaces will accommodate models and material that are better viewed and considered from above. The rest of the space is un-programmed with generous seating arrangements that thoughtfully accommodate different human needs.
