Conservations treatment of the Sala Chini, Giardini della Biennale di Venezia.
The Sala Ottagona (Octagonal Hall) is located inside the Central Pavilion of the Biennale Gardens and was built for the 1899 International Exhibition. Over time, it underwent numerous alterations, until Giò Ponti radically transformed it in 1928 by adding a new architectural structure that completely concealed the original layout. This configuration remained in place until 1986, when it was dismantled. For the following twenty years, the only work carried out in the Hall was repainting the walls and dome on a regular basis. The first documented restoration work, which concerned exclusively the domefrescoed by Galileo Chini in 1909, dates back to 2006. In 2020, our studio carried out the restoration of the mural decorative features. The use of advanced conservation methods allowed for the targeted removal of modern repainting, thereby restoring the legibility of the original decorations and bringing them back to their former glory. By carefully and reversibly integrating the frescoes, the Octagonal Hall has been restored to its 1909 appearance, when the dome painted by Chini was first unveiled.
